World Safety Declaration

Problem
Workplace safety continues to be a major financial and morale issue for companies throughout the world. Changing behavior through the sharing of best practices and collaboration on new ideas can be challenging, particularly as budgets have been cut in the SHE function.
Solution
DuPont, a world leader in safety who also sells safety products and services, became the sponsor of the World Safety Declaration. Our team conceived of this idea to bring companies throughout the world together to pledge that they would improve safety in their workplaces and share their challenges and successes with others. We executed this global effort including company recruitment into the effort, creation of a website, on-going correspondence with safety leaders in the companies, a webinar, major presentations at key industry events, signing events as companies joined the initiative and a report of accomplishments issues at the 2008 World Congress on Safety and Health at Work.
Result
Within three years, 48 major corporations representing 17 countries through the world joined this initiative. They recorded behavior changes within their company and shared their results with other signers. This effort was used by the companies to help reduce injuries and incidents in their own organizations and to demonstrate their values to customers, regulators and opinion leaders.
